How Does the College Football Playoff Work? The 12-Team Format, Byes and Bracket Explained
How does the College Football Playoff work? Twelve teams make it: five conference champions and seven at-large picks. The top four in the committee's rankings get byes, and seeds 5-12 play on campus. I went through every 12-team CFP game to see if the bye actually helps.

Quick answer: The College Football Playoff (CFP) is a 12-team, single-elimination bracket. Five spots go to conference champions: the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC champions, plus the highest-ranked champion from the American, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, Pac-12 and Sun Belt. The other seven are at-large bids, and they go to the next-highest teams in the selection committee's final rankings. The four highest-ranked teams get first-round byes. Seeds 5 through 12 play first-round games on the higher seed's campus. After that come the quarterfinals and semifinals at the big bowl games, and then the national championship. This season's title game is Monday, Jan. 25, 2027, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, per the CFP.
That's the short version. The part that trips people up is how the 12 get picked and who gets the byes. The other part is whether a bye is even worth having. I pulled every game from the two 12-team playoffs off the CFP's own recap pages to check that. The answer surprised me.
How Are College Football Playoff Teams Selected?
A selection committee picks the teams, not a computer or a poll. Starting at mid-season, the committee meets every week and puts out a Top 25. Its final ranking on Selection Day sets the field. The CFP's committee protocol lists what it weighs when teams look close:
Strength of schedule
Head-to-head results
Results against common opponents (without rewarding margin of victory)
Other factors, like key players or coaches being unavailable
The protocol also says there's no single metric. Committee members rank teams in seven rounds of secret ballots, and the first round of ballots is specifically about the top four, "who will receive first-round byes."
Automatic bids vs. at-large bids
There are 12 spots:
4 automatic bids: the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC champions
1 automatic bid: the highest-ranked champion from the American, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, Pac-12 or Sun Belt
7 at-large bids: the next-highest teams in the final ranking, from any conference
There's no cap on how many teams one conference can get in.
The Notre Dame rule
Notre Dame doesn't play in a conference, so it has its own clause. If the Irish are ranked in the top 12 of the final rankings, they're in, and the field has six at-large bids instead of seven, per the CFP format page.
Who Gets the First-Round Byes?
This is the question I see argued most, so I went to the source. The committee protocol's "Pairings" section says: "The four highest-ranked teams will be seeded 1, 2, 3 and 4 and will receive byes in the first round." Its selection sequence says the same thing: rank teams 1 to 25, and "Teams ranked Nos. 1 through 4 will be seeded accordingly and receive first-round byes."
So under the current protocol, the byes go to the top four teams in the rankings, not the top four conference champions. A team that doesn't win its conference can still be the No. 1 seed.
Conference champions do get one protection. An automatic qualifier ranked outside the top 12 is still in, and it's placed at the bottom of the seeding in rank order.
One heads-up if you read the CFP's format page: it has a line saying the top four of the five conference champions are seeded 1 through 4, which contradicts the protocol. I'm going with the protocol, because it's the committee's actual rulebook and it says the same thing twice.
How the CFP Bracket Works, Round by Round
There's no reseeding. The bracket is locked from the final ranking, and the committee doesn't move teams around to avoid rematches or conference matchups.
First round (on campus):
Home seed | Visiting seed |
No. 5 | No. 12 |
No. 6 | No. 11 |
No. 7 | No. 10 |
No. 8 | No. 9 |
Quarterfinals (bowl games):
No. 1 vs. the 8/9 winner
No. 2 vs. the 7/10 winner
No. 3 vs. the 6/11 winner
No. 4 vs. the 5/12 winner
Semifinals: the 1 vs. 8/9 winner plays the 4 vs. 5/12 winner. The 2 vs. 7/10 winner plays the 3 vs. 6/11 winner.
There's one other quirk worth knowing. The No. 1 seed picks its quarterfinal bowl, and in doing so it also picks the semifinal it would play in. Then No. 2 and No. 3 pick from the bowls that are left, and No. 4 gets whatever remains. That's 11 games in all.
If you know how March Madness works, think of the CFP as a much smaller bracket where a committee does the seeding and the top four skip the first round.

Does the Bye Help? What Two 12-Team Playoffs Show
Everyone wants a bye. But the bye teams sit for a few weeks while their quarterfinal opponents are coming off a playoff win. So I went through every game of the two 12-team playoffs on the CFP's recap pages (2024-25, 2025-26).
Bye teams in the quarterfinals:
Season | Bye team (seed) | Quarterfinal result |
2024-25 | Oregon (1) | Lost 41-21 to No. 8 Ohio State, Rose Bowl |
2024-25 | Georgia (2) | Lost 23-10 to No. 7 Notre Dame, Sugar Bowl |
2024-25 | Boise State (3) | Lost 31-14 to No. 6 Penn State, Fiesta Bowl |
2024-25 | Arizona State (4) | Lost 39-31 to No. 5 Texas, Peach Bowl |
2025-26 | Indiana (1) | Won 38-3 over No. 9 Alabama, Rose Bowl |
2025-26 | Ohio State (2) | Lost 24-14 to No. 10 Miami, Cotton Bowl |
2025-26 | Georgia (3) | Lost 39-34 to No. 6 Ole Miss, Sugar Bowl |
2025-26 | Texas Tech (4) | Lost 23-0 to No. 5 Oregon, Orange Bowl |
That's 1-7. Seven of the eight teams that earned a bye lost their first playoff game. Indiana is the only bye team to win a quarterfinal so far, and it went on to win the title, beating Oregon 56-22 in the Peach Bowl semifinal and Miami 27-21 in the championship.
Home teams in the first round:
Season | Results |
2024-25 | Hosts went 4-0: No. 5 Texas, No. 6 Penn State, No. 7 Notre Dame, No. 8 Ohio State |
2025-26 | Hosts went 2-2: No. 5 Oregon and No. 6 Ole Miss won; No. 7 Texas A&M lost to Miami, No. 8 Oklahoma lost to Alabama |
That's 6-2 for the home team. Playing on campus has been an edge.
Where the champions came from: Ohio State won the first 12-team title as the No. 8 seed and Indiana won the second as the No. 1 seed, per the CFP's history page. Both title games had a first-round team in them: No. 8 Ohio State vs. No. 7 Notre Dame, then No. 1 Indiana vs. No. 10 Miami.
Two playoffs and 22 games is a tiny sample, so I wouldn't call the bye a curse. But it hasn't been the head start it looks like. A No. 5 or No. 6 seed gets a home game, and so far that's been worth about as much as sitting out.
College Football Playoff vs. Other Playoffs
College football is the only one of these with a committee instead of a standings table. In the MLB playoffs, byes come from records. In the CFP, a committee decides who's No. 4 and who's No. 5, and those two spots are the difference between a week off and a home game. If you're still learning the game itself, I've also covered how long a football game is, plus scoring rules like the safety and the pick-six.
FAQ
How many teams are in the College Football Playoff?
Twelve: five automatic bids for conference champions and seven at-large bids. If Notre Dame is ranked in the top 12, it gets in and there are six at-large bids.
Do conference champions get a first-round bye?
Not automatically. Under the committee protocol, the four highest-ranked teams get the byes, whether or not they won their conference.
Do first-round CFP games happen at home?
Yes. Seeds 5 through 8 host seeds 12 through 9 on their own campuses.
Is the CFP bracket reseeded after each round?
No. The bracket is set on Selection Day and stays the same all the way through.
Where is the College Football Playoff national championship this season?
Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Monday, Jan. 25, 2027.
