How Long Is a Football Game? I Timed Every NFL Game From Last Season
A football game is 60 minutes of game clock, but an NFL game takes about three hours. I timed all 272 games from last season to show where the time goes, what overtime adds, and how long playoff games and the Super Bowl really run.

The 2025 NFL season opened on a Thursday night in Philadelphia, and the game took forever. Lightning showed up late in the third quarter, the Eagles and Cowboys sat in the locker room for 65 minutes, and the final whistle on a 24-20 Eagles win didn't come until 12:18 a.m. Eastern. Three days later in Jacksonville, Panthers-Jaguars stopped for more than an hour in the second quarter for the same reason.
Those two are outliers. The real answer is a lot more boring, and a lot more consistent than people think.
A football game is 60 minutes of game clock. An NFL game takes about 3 hours and 3 minutes in real life.
I didn't want to repeat the "three hours and change" line everyone uses, so I pulled the play-by-play for every game of the 2025 season from nflverse, the open data project most NFL analysts work from. Every play is stamped with the time of day it happened. I measured each game from the opening kickoff to the final snap. Across all 272 regular-season games, the average was 182.6 minutes. The median was 3:01. That's how long an NFL game is.
Here's where the time goes, what overtime adds, and which games run long.
How Many Quarters Are in Football?
Four, and each one is 15 minutes. Rule 4 of the NFL's 2025 rulebook says it in one line: "The length of the game is 60 minutes, divided into four periods of 15 minutes each."
The same rule sets the breaks. There's a break of at least two minutes after the first and third quarters, when the teams switch ends. Halftime is 13 minutes.
College football also plays four 15-minute quarters. High school games usually use 12-minute quarters, but that's set by each state association, so check yours if you're heading to a Friday night game.
Where the Other Two Hours Go
Sixty minutes of clock plus 13 minutes of halftime plus two short quarter breaks gets you to about 77 minutes. A game takes 183. So more than 100 minutes of every NFL game is time when the clock isn't moving at all.
Piece of the game | Time | What it is |
Four quarters | 60 minutes | Game clock only |
Halftime | 13 minutes | Set by Rule 4 |
Quarter breaks | About 4 minutes | At least two minutes after the 1st and 3rd quarters |
Everything else | About 106 minutes | Huddles, the 40-second play clock, incompletions, penalties, reviews, timeouts, TV breaks |
Average 2025 regular-season game | 3 hours, 3 minutes | Opening kickoff to final snap, 272 games |
The clock in football stops all the time. Incomplete pass, ball carrier goes out of bounds, a score, a penalty, a change of possession, a review. Even when it runs, there are up to 40 seconds between plays. Each team gets three timeouts per half, and the rulebook makes a charged timeout two minutes long. Then there's the two-minute warning before each half ends, which is basically a built-in TV timeout.
The typical NFL game in 2025 had about 134 snaps and kicks in it. Pro Football Network puts the actual live action at roughly 18 minutes a game. So you watch for three hours and the ball is live for a fraction of it. Every football fan knows this. Most of us watch anyway.
Hockey works the same way on a smaller scale. NHL games average 2 hours and 32 minutes for 60 minutes of play, which I broke down in how long a hockey game is. Baseball doesn't even have a clock, so its length comes down to pace, which is why how many innings are in baseball is a different kind of question.
How Long Are NFL Games by Time Slot?
I expected primetime to be the big outlier. It's longer, but only by a few minutes. These numbers leave out the two Week 1 lightning delays, which would skew the Thursday and early Sunday numbers.
Time slot | Games | Average length |
Thursday | 20 | 3 hours, 8 minutes |
Sunday early afternoon | 136 | 3 hours, 2 minutes |
Sunday late afternoon | 67 | 3 hours, 1 minute |
Sunday night | 18 | 3 hours, 7 minutes |
Monday night | 21 | 3 hours, 1 minute |
Saturday | 6 | 2 hours, 56 minutes |
My take: if you're planning your evening around a Thursday night game, give it three hours and ten minutes and you'll almost never be wrong. Sunday at 1 p.m.? You'll be done just after 4.
Scoring matters more than the time slot. Every touchdown means an extra point or two-point try, a kickoff, and usually a TV break. In 2025, games with 30 total points or fewer averaged 2:56. Games with more than 60 points averaged 3:09.
The two fastest games of the season were both 31-0 shutouts: Washington at Minnesota in Week 14 and Las Vegas at Philadelphia in Week 15. Each one ran about 2 hours and 31 minutes. Not much scoring, and one team running the ball with a lead for an entire half. That's the recipe.
How Long Is Overtime in the NFL?
In the regular season, overtime is one 10-minute period. Starting in 2025, both teams get at least one possession in regular-season overtime, unless the kicking team scores a safety on the first drive. Before that, a touchdown on the first drive ended it. If it's still tied after 10 minutes, the game ends in a tie.
In the playoffs, there are no ties. Overtime periods are 15 minutes, both teams get a chance with the ball, and they keep playing until someone wins.
How the game ended | Games | Average length |
Regulation | 258 | 3 hours, 1 minute |
Overtime | 14 | 3 hours, 26 minutes |
All 2025 regular-season games | 272 | 3 hours, 3 minutes |
Overtime adds about 25 minutes on average, which is more than I would have guessed. The new possession rule is part of it. A first-drive touchdown doesn't end the game anymore, so you're guaranteed at least two drives.
The longest games of 2025 that didn't have a weather delay were both Cowboys home games that went to overtime. The Giants lost 40-37 in Dallas in Week 2, and the Packers and Cowboys tied 40-40 in Week 4. Both ran about 3 hours and 42 minutes. That tie was the only one of the season.
How Long Is a Playoff Game, and the Super Bowl?
Playoff games run a little longer. The 13 postseason games last season averaged 3 hours and 11 minutes, about eight minutes more than the regular season. Denver's 33-30 overtime win over Buffalo in the divisional round ran 3:38.
The Super Bowl is the longest game of the year, and it's not because of the football. Halftime is built around a full concert, so it runs far longer than the usual 13 minutes. Super Bowl LX in February, Seattle's 29-13 win over New England, ran 3 hours and 42 minutes from kickoff to final snap. Without overtime. I wrote about everything a city has to pull off just to stage that game in what it takes to host a Super Bowl.
Are NFL Games Getting Longer?
Not really. The 2024 regular season averaged 3:03 too, almost to the minute (183.1 minutes to 182.6). Through the first 64 games of the 2026 season, the average is 3:06, which is a small bump but still early.
The league has been tinkering, though. The new kickoff, made permanent in 2025 with touchbacks moved out to the 35, is supposed to create more returns, according to the Associated Press. More returns mean more live plays, not fewer, so I don't expect that to make games shorter.
Honestly, three hours is about right for a football game. It's long enough to feel like an event and short enough that a 1 p.m. kickoff is done by dinner. If you want the people who stand on the field for every one of those 183 minutes, here's how much NFL referees make.

How long is a football game in actual playing time? Sixty minutes of game clock, split into four 15-minute quarters. The ball is only live for a small slice of that.
