How Long Is a Baseball Game? I Timed Every MLB Game Since 2021

An MLB game takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes, and nine-inning games averaged 2:42 in 2026. I pulled the official time of every MLB game since 2021 to show what the pitch clock changed, what extra innings add, why games got longer in 2026 and how long playoff games run.

A Major League Baseball game takes about two hours and 45 minutes. That was the average across all 2,430 games of the 2026 regular season, from first pitch to final out, extra innings and all. If you only count nine-inning games, the 2026 average was 2 hours and 42 minutes.

That's a lot shorter than the baseball a lot of fans grew up with. In 2021, the average nine-inning game ran 3:10, the longest in history. Then the pitch clock showed up and cut almost half an hour out of every game.

I pulled the official game time for every MLB game since 2021, regular season and postseason, out of MLB's own Stats API. Here's what the numbers say about regular-season games, extra innings, playoff games, and why games got a little longer again in 2026.

A regulation game is nine innings, and each inning has a top half and a bottom half. If the home team is winning after the top of the ninth, they don't bat, so a lot of "nine-inning" games are really eight and a half. I covered the inning rules in more detail in how many innings are in baseball.

Unlike football, basketball and hockey, there's no game clock. A baseball game lasts exactly as long as it takes to get 27 outs per side. That's why it's the hardest of the major sports to predict.

Most Games Land Between 2:30 and 3:00

The average hides a pretty tight range. Here's how the 2,220 nine-inning games of the 2026 regular season broke down:

So about six in ten nine-inning games finish somewhere between 2:30 and 3:00. Only 3% went past 3:15 without needing extra innings.

The quickest game of the 2026 season was Braves at Phillies on September 7. It took 1 hour and 51 minutes. The longest was White Sox at Red Sox on August 6, a 13-inning game that ran 4 hours and 23 minutes.

If you're planning a night at the ballpark, budget three hours, with time to park and find your seats on top of that. You'll usually get out early.

What the Pitch Clock Did to Game Length

This is the part that still surprises people. Look at the nine-inning average year by year:

The pitch clock arrived in 2023. Pitchers got 15 seconds between pitches with the bases empty and 20 with runners on, and batters got 30 seconds between hitters, according to MLB's pitch timer rule page. In 2024 the runners-on timer dropped to 18 seconds. Games fell from 3:04 to 2:40 in one season, and in 2024 the average hit 2:36, the shortest since 1984.

The other way to see it: in 2021, 1,635 regular-season games went three hours or longer. In 2026, 473 did. I wrote about the whole 2023 rules package, including the bigger bases and the shift ban, in how 2023's baseball rule revisions changed the game.

Why Games Got Longer in 2026

The average crept back up four minutes in 2026, and part of that was the robot umpires.

2026 was the first season with the ABS Challenge System. Each team gets two challenges. The batter, pitcher or catcher can tap their helmet or cap to appeal a ball or strike call, and the screen shows the pitch tracked against the zone. According to the AP, MLB attributed 61 seconds of 2026's 3:43 increase to the challenges.

That leaves almost three minutes MLB didn't explain with the challenge system. My guess is it's the normal drift you get once hitters and pitchers figure out a rule. Players learned how to use every second of the clock, and the average had already inched up from 2:36 to 2:38 in 2025, before ABS showed up.

Honestly, I'll take four extra minutes for getting the big calls right. A 2:42 game is still 28 minutes shorter than 2021. And nobody wants to go back to the four-hour Yankees-Red Sox games, which, for what it's worth, haven't gone away. The Yankees had the longest nine-inning games in the majors in 2026 at 2:47 on average. The Rays had the shortest at 2:35.

How Much Do Extra Innings Add?

About 20 minutes for the 10th inning, and then roughly another 20 to 25 for each inning after that. Extra innings happened in 209 games in 2026, about one in every 12.

Regular-season extra innings are faster than they used to be because of the automatic runner. Every half-inning after the ninth starts with a runner on second base, per MLB's rule, which means most games end in the 10th or 11th. Only 18 games in 2026 needed 12 innings or more.

The automatic runner doesn't apply in the postseason. That's how you end up with games like Game 3 of the 2025 World Series between the Blue Jays and Dodgers, which went 18 innings and took 6 hours and 39 minutes. Freddie Freeman ended it with a walk-off homer leading off the bottom of the 18th, according to MLB.com's recap. It tied the 2018 Dodgers-Red Sox Game 3 as the longest World Series game by innings.

The longest game in MLB history by time is the White Sox-Brewers marathon from May 8-9, 1984. It was suspended after 17 innings, finished the next night, and took 8 hours and 6 minutes in all before Harold Baines ended it with a homer in the 25th, per the Baseball Hall of Fame.

How Long Are MLB Playoff Games?

Playoff baseball takes longer, every year. Since the pitch clock arrived, postseason games have run about three hours, roughly 20 to 30 minutes more than a nine-inning regular-season game.

The extra time comes from longer TV breaks between innings, more pitching changes and more mound strategy when every game matters. And with no automatic runner, a tied playoff game can go a long way. In the 2026 Wild Card and Division Series rounds, the longest game was Game 4 of the Guardians-White Sox ALDS, a 9-5 Cleveland win that ran 3:39 without needing extra innings.

The World Series tends to run longest of all. Games averaged 3:13 in 2023, 3:21 in 2024 and 3:39 in 2025, with that 18-inning game in the middle.

If you want to know how the bracket fits together, or why the top two seeds in each league get a bye, I broke that down in how the MLB playoffs work.

How Does Baseball Compare to Other Sports?

Baseball used to be the long one. Since the pitch clock, it's in the middle.

Quick Answers

How long is a baseball game? About 2 hours and 45 minutes. All MLB games averaged 2:45 in the 2026 regular season, and nine-inning games averaged 2:42.

How long is an MLB game with extra innings? A 10-inning game averaged 3:04 in 2026, and an 11-inning game averaged 3:28.

How long is a playoff baseball game? About three hours. Postseason games averaged 3:03 to 3:07 from 2023 to 2025, and 3:00 in the 2026 Wild Card and Division Series rounds.

Why are baseball games shorter than they used to be? The pitch clock, added in 2023, limits pitchers to 15 seconds between pitches with the bases empty and 18 with runners on. Average game time dropped by 24 minutes in its first season.

What's the longest MLB game ever? By time, the White Sox beat the Brewers 7-6 in 25 innings on May 8-9, 1984, a game that took 8 hours and 6 minutes.

All those innings need someone behind the plate calling balls and strikes, challenges or not. If you've ever wondered what that job pays, here's how much MLB umpires make.
